Oklahoma's Most Wanted

An Editorial by the Wall Street Journal
November 19, 2007

A veteran political activist is facing 10 years in prison and a hefty fine for attempting to petition government for redress of grievances. The latest news from Pakistan? No, this is happening in Oklahoma.

Last month Paul Jacob, the former head of U.S. Term Limits and current head of Citizens in Charge, was led out of an Oklahoma City courtroom in handcuffs after pleading not guilty to charges that he conspired to defraud the state. Oklahoma Attorney General Drew Edmondson, who's overseeing this bizarre prosecution, has accused Mr. Jacob and two fellow petition organizers--Rick Carpenter of Oklahomans in Action and Susan Johnson of National Voter Outreach--of bringing out-of-state petition gatherers to Oklahoma to collect signatures.

Steve Forbes: Has North Korea Annexed Oklahoma?

From Forbes.com
November 9, 2007

Steve Forbes today wrote about the situation of the Oklahoma 3: "The Oklahoma case stands out as an extreme move to restrict the behavior of political activists. But unless this thuggish behavior is firmly punished, other states and municipalities will quickly follow suit. After all, many local pols and their developer friends have been making ample use of the Supreme Court's hideous decision two years ago that allows local authorities to seize private property to help politically connected private developers. Jacob has worked with Oklahomans pushing an initiative that would bar this type of eminent domain abuse, as well as a state term limits initiative. Now he is accused of committing a felony."

Lefty-Turned-Limited Government Advocate: Sandy Harmon

November 5, 2007

You'd never guess it now, but Sandy Harmon began his political career as a Lefty.

"I started out in politics by campaigning for JFK and later LBJ," Harmon said. "I was a young, dumb Democrat, swallowing the lines of bigger government being better. I was caught on the horns of a dilemma, though, as what I was believing flew in the face of what our Founding Fathers held dear."

He said he eventually outgrew these "statist beliefs" and began writing speeches and ad copy pro bono for various Republican politicians. "Eventually I realized that there wasn't a dime's worth of difference between the parties and became a Libertarian," he said.
